Minor natural gas leak detected in Wheatley

Chatham-Kent Fire & Rescue officials say firefighters with Station #20 Wheatley responded to a report of a smell of gas around Talbot and Erie Street in Wheatley.

Fire officials say the call came in just after 10 p.m. on Sunday, February 26, 2023.

Crews, along with HSE Integrated attended the area and after investigation found zero readings, fire officials said in a media release, adding that crews conducted a check of the gas meters in the downtown core and contacted Enbridge after a minor natural gas leak was identified.

Upon arrival Enbridge conducted repairs on the gas meter, fire officials added.

“We commend the community for taking the right steps to call when a gas odour is detected, keeping safety top of mind,” said Windsor-Essex/Chatham-Kent Operations Manager, Brain Chauvin, in a media release.

“Free emergency response is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, by calling our emergency number at 1-866-763-5427 or 911 from a safe distance away from the leak – never assume someone else has called.”
