The power of checking in

From The Pastor’s Pen – By Brian Horrobin

Back in early March, I heard about an incident that really blessed me.

A teenage girl in our church was speaking with her aunt about an older man from our church, a very regular attender, who had been absent for a couple of Sundays.

Her aunt encouraged her to go to this man’s house and pay him a visit, which she did.

As you can likely imagine, her visit lifted this man’s spirits.

Wouldn’t you agree that we need to see more of this type of thing in our world today?

In Genesis 4:9 God asked Cain about the whereabouts of his brother, Abel, whom he had just killed.

Cain’s response was, “I do not know; am I my brother’s keeper?””

God already knew, of course, but the fact is we most definitely are to be our brother’s keeper!

Jesus made this very clear when He established the Golden Rule.

Here is what our Savior said in Matthew 7:12: “So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.”

When you think about it, it really doesn’t take too much effort just to “check in” on people when they have a need.

My sister passed away in February and it was an emotional time for me.

However, I felt so loved and supported by the numerous cards, phone calls, emails, and Facebook messages that I received from people.

It was like being wrapped in a warm blanket on a cold day – it meant so much to me.

I am convinced that a reason that we do not reach out to others more is due to the fact that we are living our busy lives and just do not make such a thing a priority.

Let’s think about that today and ask the Lord to help us make this more of a priority in our lives.
