Faith: Going a bit farther

From The Pastor’s Pen – By Brian Horrobin

I like the definition of faith that we find in Hebrews 11:1: “Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.”

In other words, faith is the ability to see something that is further down the road than where you are at the present time.

I think singer and songwriter, David Bowie, had it right when he said this: “If you feel safe in the area that you are working in, you’re not working in the right area. Always go a little further into the water than you feel you’re capable of being in. Go a little bit out of your depth, and when you don’t feel that your feet are quite touching the bottom, you’re just about in the right place to do something exciting.”

It is both an exciting, and terrifying, place to be, but new ground is not gained by going over the same territory continually.

When I first started doing weight workouts at the local gym a number of years ago, I ventured there with trepidation in my heart.

I worried about looking silly or doing things wrong and getting injured.

To help me, I sought the advice of other, seasoned athletes who had been at this for a while.

I got valuable tips from them about where to start, how to use certain machines and free weights, how many reps to do on each exercise, and how often to go.

All of that information was valuable to me but there was still one key ingredient that I was responsible for supplying: I had to actually get my butt down to that gym and get started.

This took faith for me, as it was a place outside my comfort zone, and it challenged me to go down a road I had not been down before.

That first time was the most difficult, but it broke a barrier for me and now I go three times every week and absolutely love it.

As the years have gone by, I have sought ways to improve on my routine and try some new exercise, each one challenging me to go a little further than I thought capable of doing.

So, what are you waiting for?

Pray and ask the Lord to help you delve a little deeper and see where your faith will take you!
