Changes to the Leaf & Yard Waste Collection Program in Chatham-Kent

The Municipality of Chatham-Kent currently offers curbside leaf and yard waste collection services in eight communities and operates nine leaf and yard depots throughout Chatham-Kent.

The Municipality is transitioning to a paper bag mandate in communities that are currently subject to a clear bag mandate for curbside leaf and yard waste collection:

– Bates Subdivision

– Blenheim

– Bothwell

– Thamesville

– Ridgetown

– Tilbury

The use of paper bags is common practice in Ontario municipalities, Municipal officials say.

They reduce environmental impact by minimizing plastic waste and promote sustainability by encouraging the use of biodegradable materials.

Paper bags are more easily recyclable and compostable, offering an eco-friendlier option than plastic bags.

Starting January 1, 2025, leaf and yard waste will no longer be accepted in clear plastic bags at the curb.

Residents must use paper bags, which are available at most retail stores.

Between now and January 2025, plastic bags will still be collected, but residents are encouraged to transition to paper bags as soon as feasible.
