Update: Youth charged with arson after a fire at CKSS

Chatham-Kent Police Service officials allege: On October 30, 2023, at 1:34 p.m., emergency crews responded to the Chatham-Kent Secondary School on McNaughton Avenue East in Chatham for an activated fire alarm.

The Chatham-Kent Fire Department discovered a fire had been ignited in the men’s bathroom on the second floor, which prompted an arson investigation.

Investigators identified a suspect and formed grounds to charge the youth in connection with the incident.

On November 6, 2023, at approximately 2:30 p.m., the 14-year-old Chatham youth was arrested and charged with arson – disregard for human life and arson – damage to property.

He was transported to police headquarters and held pending a bail hearing.

On November 7, 2023, the youth is set to appear in court.
