SCRCA issues watershed conditions statement

The St. Clair Region Conservation Authority (SCRCA) issued a watershed conditions statement on Thursday, April 11, 2024.

SCRCA officials say 30-50 mm of rain is expected, along with saturated soils, increased runoff, elevated water levels and the potential for minor flooding.

“Environment Canada is tracking a Texas low-pressure system that is expected to move into Southwestern Ontario early Thursday, April 11 through to Friday, April 12,” SCRCA officials say.

“Current forecasts predict 30-50 mm of rain. There is also a risk of thunderstorms, which may increase rainfall amounts in localized areas. Significant flooding is not expected at this time but water levels are expected to rise in local creeks and streams. Soils are anticipated to become saturated from the rain and could contribute to ponding, increased runoff into watercourses, and possible increased erosion and seepage issues. Rising water levels may spill into natural floodplain areas, parks and fields.”

SCRCA officials added: “Individuals are reminded to avoid watercourses and flooded areas due to dangerous conditions, slippery banks and cold, swift moving water. Children and pets should be kept away from the water. The Conservation Authority continues to monitor watershed conditions and will issue advisories to municipalities and media should flood issues arise. Municipal emergency response staff and road superintendents should monitor local conditions closely.”

This message will remain in effect until Monday, April 15, 2024 at 9 a.m. unless otherwise updated.
