A water safety bulletin has been issued by the St. Clair Region Conservation Authority, as heavy rain is expected this afternoon and into this evening, June 5, 2024.
“Environment Canada is tracking a cold front that has the potential of producing scattered thunderstorms this afternoon and into this evening,” SCRCA officials say.
“Forecasts predict rainfall amounts of 20 to 25 mm, with moderated to severe thunderstorms potentially bringing 25 to 50 mm of precipitation in localized areas. Due to the potential intensity of the storms, water levels are expected to rise rapidly and produce localized runoff. High amounts of rainfall in a short period of time can lead to increased runoff and flash flooding, particularly in urban areas.”
SCRCA officials added: “Water levels are anticipated to be elevated from the rainfall with the potential for minor flooding into natural floodplain areas, parks and fields; major flooding is not anticipated at this time. Individuals are reminded to avoid watercourses and flooded areas due to dangerous conditions, slippery banks and cold, swift moving water. Children and pets should be kept away from the water. The Conservation Authority continues to monitor watershed conditions and will issue advisories to municipalities and media should flood issues arise.”
Municipal emergency response staff and road superintendents should monitor local conditions closely, SCRCA officials added.
This message will remain in effect until Friday, June 7, 2024 at 12 p.m. unless otherwise updated.
