Update: Body of missing swimmer recovered in Leamington

Update: Marine Unit members with the Essex detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have recovered the body of a missing swimmer.

An eyewitness located the missing person in the water and called police.

The victim, a 32-year-old man from Leamington, was reported missing on June 23, 2024, after failing to resurface while swimming at the Leamington pier.

A post-mortem will be conducted at a Windsor hospital.

The OPP wish to thank Leamington Fire Services, Essex-Windsor Emergency Medical Services and the Canadian Coast Guard for their assistance.


OPP officials allege: Members of the Essex detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are actively searching for a missing swimmer in Leamington.

On June 23, 2024, at approximately 7 p.m., police received a report that a swimmer entered the water near the Leamington docks, began to struggle and did not resurface.

Searchers with the OPP, the Canadian Coast Guard, Leamington Fire Services, Essex-Windsor Emergency Medical Services and a civilian marine tow service were unable to locate the individual.

The OPP Underwater Search and Recovery Unit will attend the scene to assist search efforts.
