The St. Clair Region Conservation Authority issued an update on Tuesday, July 16, 2024, as a flood watch continues across the watershed.
SCRCA officials say Environment Canada was tracking another potential round of thunderstorms late afternoon and evening on Tuesday for the upper reaches of the watershed.
“The St. Clair watershed is completely saturated and water levels are elevated across the region,” SCRCA officials said at 4:25 p.m.
“The water levels in Strathroy (were) expected to peak (Tuesday) evening. The upper reaches of the watershed should be expected to experience elevated water levels for the next 24 hours. Widespread flooding is happening across several areas in the St. Clair Region watershed. Localized flooding in low-lying areas; floodplain, agricultural, and parkland is anticipated.”
Individuals are reminded to avoid watercourses and flooded areas due to dangerous conditions, slippery banks, and cold, swift-moving water and children and pets should be kept away from the water, SCRCA officials say.
The Conservation Authority continues to monitor watershed conditions and will issue advisories to municipalities and media should flood issues arise.
Municipal emergency response staff and road superintendents should monitor local conditions closely.
This flood watch will remain in effect until Friday, July 19, 2024, at 12 p.m. unless otherwise updated.
