Waterspout confirmed in Erieau

The Northern Tornadoes Project (NTP) has confirmed a waterspout in Erieau on August 3, 2024.

NTP officials say another waterspout in Ontario at Bowers Beach on August 17 and two waterspouts in Nova Scotia, August 13 and 16, were also confirmed.

“A waterspout is simply a tornado over water, and since these waterspouts did not move ashore, they are classified as Tornado (over water),” NTP officials say.

“And since there was no damage recorded they have each been assigned an EF0-Default rating.”

The Erieau waterspout started at 7:44 a.m.

“A witness captured video of a waterspout over Lake Erie south of Erieau,” MTP officials say.

“No damage was reported. Event time is based on witness report.”

The Northern Tornadoes Project (NTP), founded at Western University in 2017 with the support of social impact fund ImpactWX, aims to better detect tornado occurrence throughout Canada, improve severe and extreme weather understanding and prediction, mitigate against harm to people and property, and investigate future implications due to climate change.
