The St. Clair Region Conservation Authority (SCRCA) issued a flood warning on Thursday, March 6, 2025.
“Over the last two days, the SCRCA watershed has received upwards of 20 mm of mixed precipitation, mainly in the form of rainfall,” SCRCA officials say.
“This, coupled with warm temperatures, has resulted in snowmelt, deteriorating ice conditions, and increased runoff throughout the region. Below freezing temperatures today and overnight will slow further snowmelt and ice loss, however this stored water will start to work its way through the system over the next five days when temperatures begin to fluctuate.”
SCRCA officials added: “Water levels on the east branch and the upper reaches of the north branch of the Sydenham River are beginning to level off; water levels along Bear and Black Creeks south of Petrolia continue to slowly rise but should begin stagnating over the next six to eight hours. The return to mild temperatures over the next week will produce further runoff which will slow the decline of water levels.”
At present, the following roads are impacted by floodwater:
– Plowing Match Road between Petrolia Line and Rokeby Line
– Pretty Road between Stanley Line and McCallum Line
“Individuals are reminded to avoid watercourses and flooded areas due to dangerous and unstable ice conditions, slippery banks, and cold, swift moving water,” SCRCA officials added.
“Children and pets should be kept away from the water. The Conservation Authority continues to monitor watershed conditions and will issue advisories to municipalities and media should flood issues arise. Municipal emergency response staff and road superintendents should monitor local conditions closely.”
This message will remain in effect until 12 p.m. on March 10, 2025, unless otherwise updated.
