Firefighters responded to a tent fire at the Thames Street encampment in Chatham on Wednesday, March 26, 2025.
Chatham-Kent Fire & Rescue officials say Stations #1 & #2 – Chatham responded to the blaze at 3:04 p.m.
“Within minutes of arriving at the scene, firefighters swiftly evacuated propane tanks from the vicinity and extinguished the flames,” fire officials said in a media release.
“CKFR Prevention and Community Safety departments, in collaboration with the Chatham Kent Police Service and CK Housing Services, conducted a visit to the encampment to verify that adequate space existed between the tents a few weeks ago. Diligent efforts have been made by community partners to reduce the presence of combustibles in the area.”
There were no injuries and the cause of the fire is undetermined, fire officials added.
“CKFR is reminding residents to ensure safe use of propane heaters, never use outdoor heaters indoors, ensure proper ventilation, keep heaters away from flammable materials, and always follow manufacturer instructions,” fire officials added.
