From The Pastor’s Pen – By Brian Horrobin
Did you know that just a little bit of kindness can go a long way?
It was the late Amelia Earhart who once said, “A single act of kindness throws out roots in all directions, and the roots spring up and make new trees.”
A number of summers ago I was coaching my youngest son, Michael, in house league soccer.
There were only four teams in this group of young teenagers, so we ended up playing the same team every three weeks.
One team absolutely dominated the league that year and won every single game, if I am not mistaken.
Our team dreaded every third week, knowing that a shellacking on the field awaited them.
However, there was something that made each of those blowout losses just a tad more bearable.
This team’s coach, local vegetable grower Dave Vansedgebrook, brought a large watermelon or two and gave generous slices to ALL the players and coaches, not just those on his team.
So yes, I do remember losing badly every third week of that summer, but I also remember the kindness of this coach.
God is a kind and loving God.
The Bible says as much in Romans 2:4: “Or do you show contempt for the riches of His kindness, forbearance and patience, not realizing that God’s kindness is intended to lead you to repentance?”
When you think about it, it is not really all that difficult to extend a little kindness when the situation calls for it.
Oh, and a little can sometimes go a long way.
So, keep your radar on this week leading up to Good Friday and Easter and look for someone who could use a little kindness to help them get through their day.
Those little roots just might spread and become a lush grove of trees.
