On the evening of April 13, just before 11 p.m., the Walpole Island Fire Department responded to a report of a brush fire.
“Upon arrival, crews discovered multiple small fires being monitored by a community member,” Walpole Fire Department officials said on social media.
“The individual stated he was conducting a controlled burn and believed he had the situation under control. Fire crews noted that the fires were spread out over a considerable distance. After speaking with the individual and assessing the situation, firefighters safely extinguished all fires without incident.”
Fire officials added: “The Walpole Island Fire Department would like to remind residents to contact us prior to conducting any controlled burns. This allows us to ensure public safety and avoid unnecessary emergency responses.
We will be conducting our own controlled burns again this year and will be working from the lists compiled last year. We appreciate your patience and cooperation during this process.”
