Handgun pointed during a Sarnia assault, two arrests made after hours-long standoff

Sarnia Police Service officials allege: On May 27 2025 at 1:54 pm, Sarnia Police were called to Vidal Street South (north of Devine Street) for a report of an in-progress assault between three males. Witnesses reported that a Vidal Street South resident was the victim of an assault involving two other males.

During this dispute, one of the two males produced a handgun and pointed it at the 51 year old victim’s head.

As police sirens were heard approaching, the two males fled into a nearby apartment moments before police arrival.

Officers set up containment on the residence and secured the area.

The involved (and potentially armed) individuals refused to exit the residence, necessitating a tactical response.

As the SPS ERT was unavailable due to annual training, assistance from OPP TRU was obtained to provide a tactical presence at the incident.

Negotiations ensued for several hours until both males ultimately surrendered themselves to police at approximately 8:35 p.m.

At this time, the following individuals have been arrested and are being held for bail on the following charges:

A 36-year-old man of no fixed address:

– Assault

– Assault with a weapon

– Unauthorized possession of a firearm

– Point Firearm

– Careless use of a firearm

A 54-year-old man of no fixed address:

– Assault

– Uttering Threats

“The OPP and Sarnia Police would like to take this opportunity to thank the motoring public and members of the community for their patience while officers dealt with this ongoing incident,” stated Sergeant Ed Sanchuk, Media Coordinator, West Region Headquarters, in a media release.

Anyone with information on this matter, or who may have witnessed or video/surveillance captured the initial altercation on the street, are asked to contact the Sarnia Police Criminal Investigations Division at 519-344-8861.
