Chatham BIA chooses their 2025 mural contest winner

A vibrant new mural is set to transform the east-facing wall of the Garden Event Centre in downtown Chatham, thanks to the vision of local artist Ruth Ann Pearce and the support of the Historic Downtown Chatham Business Improvement Area (BIA). The installation, located at 4th Street and King Street West, was chosen for its creative take on the theme Inspiring Community Pride Through the Exploration of Our History and Heritage within Chatham-Kent.

“We are excited to bring this beautiful artwork to life,” said Kaitlin Goulet, Executive Director of the Historic Downtown Chatham BIA. “It reflects the spirit of our community and the stories that make Chatham-Kent unique.”

Pearce’s design will be printed on three panels, each 12 feet wide by 16 feet high, and permanently installed to enhance the downtown streetscape while celebrating Chatham’s diverse identity. The project was made possible with support from BIA members, IMPACT Graphics, Hydro One funding, and Ward 6 Councillors Michael Bondy, Brock McGregor, Marjorie Crew, Conor Allin, and Mayor Darrin Canniff.

“The mural will not only enhance the aesthetic appeal of our downtown area but also celebrate the rich cultural heritage of Chatham,” said Councillor Conor Allin.

“Living in Chatham-Kent means embracing a life enriched by community, nature, and history,” Pearce stated. “Whether you’re from Tilbury or Thamesville, born and raised, or new to the area, I hope you discover hidden stories and appreciate the richness of Chatham-Kent through this artwork.”

A public mural launch event will be held Thursday, July 10 at 6 p.m. at the Garden Event Centre.

Originally from Chatham, Pearce studied at OCAD University and later returned home in 2021 to co-found the Chatham Creative Company. She continues to use her talents to serve local organizations and tell the stories of the community through art and design.
