As temperatures climb and families flock to pools, lakes and beaches, the Essex County detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police is reminding residents to make water safety a priority.
Each year in Ontario, preventable drownings and water-related injuries claim lives. Whether enjoying a backyard pool or a day at the lake, the OPP says basic precautions can help avoid tragedy.
“One of the best ways to stay safe around water is to always supervise children and inexperienced swimmers,” said Superintendent Mark Loucas, Detachment Commander for Essex County OPP. “Even strong swimmers can get into trouble quickly, so it’s crucial to stay alert.”
Police are urging swimmers never to swim alone, to wear life jackets in open water or while boating, and to know their limits—especially when alcohol or drugs are involved. Inflatables such as pool floats or water wings should never be considered safety equipment.
With July and August being the busiest months for swimming, now is the time for families to review safety practices. Many local pools and community centres offer swim lessons and CPR training.
“Learning how to respond in an emergency, and how to prevent one in the first place, can make all the difference,” Loucas said.
