Prolonged heat wave continues across Chatham-Kent region

A heat warning remains in effect for Chatham-Kent, with Environment Canada advising that extreme temperatures and humidity will continue through Thursday.

Daytime highs between 29 and 32 C are expected, with humidex values reaching 35 to 40. Overnight lows of 19 to 23 C are offering little relief from the heat.

The stretch of hot, humid weather is forecast to persist across much of southern Ontario until a shift in the weather pattern late in the week brings relief Thursday night.

Officials are urging residents to take precautions against heat-related illnesses. Vulnerable populations — including older adults, children, those living alone, and people with pre-existing conditions — should be checked on regularly.

Common signs of heat exhaustion include headache, nausea, dizziness, thirst, dark urine and fatigue. Residents are reminded to stop activity, rest, and hydrate if they experience symptoms.

Heat stroke is a medical emergency. Call 911 immediately if someone exhibits symptoms such as confusion, red or hot skin, fainting, or vomiting. While waiting for medical help, cool the person by moving them to a shaded area, applying cold water or ice packs, and removing extra clothing.

Health officials recommend staying hydrated, keeping homes cool with blinds and fans or air conditioning, and seeking relief in public cooling centres, community hubs, libraries or shaded outdoor areas.

Outdoor activities should be limited to cooler parts of the day, and protective clothing, sunscreen, and hats are advised when outside.

Children and pets should never be left in parked vehicles.

Residents are encouraged to follow guidance from their local public health authority and monitor updates from Environment Canada. Reports of severe weather can be submitted via email to ONstorm@ec.gc.ca or on social media using #ONStorm.
