Cryptocurrency scam advisory

Sarnia Police Service officials allege: City police are warning residents to be vigilant as reports of cryptocurrency scams continue to surface, with some victims losing more than $100,000.

The Sarnia Police Service said fraudsters often target the elderly and those unfamiliar with cryptocurrency or online financial tools. While these scams are widespread across North America, local residents are also being affected.

Police urge residents to exercise extreme caution when approached with investment opportunities or urgent requests involving bitcoin. Common tactics include threats of arrest, fake tech support calls, and promises of high returns from online acquaintances.

Authorities stressed that no legitimate agency will ever request payment in cryptocurrency. Residents are encouraged to avoid clicking suspicious links, to verify the identity of anyone asking for money, and to seek trusted financial advice before acting.

Police said these scams are difficult to investigate and that recovering funds is unlikely, making prevention and public awareness key.
