A prolonged stretch of hot and humid weather is expected to continue through today and possibly into Wednesday for parts of southern Ontario, according to Environment Canada.
This includes Chatham-Kent, as a heat warning remains in place.
Daytime highs are forecast to reach 32 to 35 C, with humidex values between 37 and 42. Overnight lows will remain warm at 20 to 23 C. A cooler air mass is expected to arrive tonight, bringing relief for most areas, although eastern Ontario and the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area could see the heat linger into midweek.
The combination of heat and humidity may also result in deteriorating air quality, with the Air Quality Health Index potentially reaching the high-risk category. Officials advise residents to take precautions, as extreme heat can affect anyone’s health. Those most at risk include older adults, people living alone, and individuals with pre-existing health conditions.
Environment Canada urges the public to watch for signs of heat-related illness, such as headache, nausea, dizziness, thirst, dark urine and fatigue. Heat stroke, which can cause red and hot skin, confusion, or loss of consciousness, is considered a medical emergency.
Residents are advised to drink water regularly, keep living spaces cool, use fans or air conditioning, and seek out cooler public spaces if necessary. Outdoor activities should be planned for the coolest times of the day, and lightweight, light-coloured clothing is recommended. Pets and children should never be left in parked vehicles.
Heat warnings are issued when high temperatures or humidity pose an elevated risk of illnesses such as heat stroke or heat exhaustion. Environment Canada recommends following the guidance of local public health authorities and continuing to monitor forecasts and alerts.
