Walpole Island to mark 229th anniversary of St. Anne’s Island Treaty

Walpole Island First Nation will host Treaty Day on Saturday, Aug. 30, to mark the 229th anniversary of the St. Anne’s Island Treaty. The daylong recognition and celebration will take place at the Walpole Island Sports Complex and surrounding areas.

Organizers say the event will highlight the historical and contemporary significance of the treaty to Bkejwanong Territory and Anishinaabe people.

The day will begin before sunrise with a ceremony led by Darren Wrightman, followed by breakfast at the arena. Later in the morning, a presentation on the St. Anne’s Island Treaty will be given by Ramsey Kicknosway, also at the arena.

Afternoon activities will include pontoon rides on the High Banks, an Elders and Youth Sharing Circle, and family events such as inflatables. The community feast is scheduled for the evening at the arena, and the celebration will conclude with fireworks at the High Banks.

The event is open to the community and aims to educate, celebrate, and strengthen connections to the treaty relationship.
