Temporary tap water discolouration in Wheatley and Tilbury

Customers of the Wheatley and Tilbury water distribution system may see slightly discoloured water coming from water taps.

The Municipality of Chatham-Kent issued a statement on Friday, August 29, 2025.

“The safety of the water is not affected by this colour issue,” officials say.

“The discolouration will last for a brief period of time and will clear naturally as the system replenishes with new water. The cause is naturally occurring colour in the Lake Erie raw water supply related to water temperature fluctuations and lake turnover. The Wheatley and Tilbury water distribution system receives its water from the Water Treatment Plant in Wheatley and may experience the discoloured water starting Friday night. Once the lake returns to normal, the system will be flushed.”

The Chatham-Kent PUC is keeping the Chatham-Kent Public Health Unit informed and the Public Health Unit will continue to consult with the PUC until the situation resolves.

“At this time there have been no water testing results that indicate there is any health risk from drinking the water,” officials added.

A similar notice was issued earlier in the week for Bothwell.
