Walpole Island begins phragmites maintenance along Swift Cut

Work to control invasive phragmites is underway along the Swift Cut at Walpole Island First Nation.

The project, which runs from Sept. 4 to 15, is being carried out in partnership with Point Pelee National Park and the Resource Protection team. Equipment being used includes the Swamp Devil and a weed harvester.

The effort is aimed at reducing invasive growth, improving visibility and widening the cut to make boat traffic safer. Officials said machinery will be active in the area during the project and are asking boaters to use caution when travelling through.

Marcus Miskokomon, interim team lead for Resource Protection, said the community’s cooperation is appreciated as the work supports both safety and environmental restoration.
