Mosquitoes in Dresden test positive for West Nile virus

Mosquitoes trapped in Dresden have tested positive for West Nile virus, Chatham-Kent Public Health confirmed Tuesday.

The samples were collected on Sept. 3 and mark the first positive pool identified in Chatham-Kent this season.

West Nile virus is spread through the bite of an infected mosquito. While many people experience no symptoms, others may develop fever, headache, body aches and fatigue. In rare cases, the illness can become severe, leading to stiff neck, nausea, difficulty swallowing, vomiting or paralysis. Older adults and those with weakened immune systems face a higher risk of serious illness.

Public health officials are reminding residents that West Nile virus remains a risk whenever mosquitoes are active. They urge residents to take precautions such as wearing protective clothing, using insect repellent, avoiding outdoor activities during peak mosquito hours, maintaining intact window screens and removing standing water from their properties.
