OPP and London police shut down illegal cannabis dispensary

OPP officials allege: An illegal cannabis dispensary in London has been shut down following a joint investigation by Ontario Provincial Police and the London Police Service.

The OPP-led Provincial Joint Forces Cannabis Enforcement Team began investigating the operation in July. Police said the business, known as Chief’s Corner, was operating without authorization from the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario or Health Canada.

On Aug. 20, investigators executed a search warrant at the storefront, seizing cannabis products valued at about $39,000 and $2,200 in cash. The dispensary has since been closed under interim orders issued through the Cannabis Control Act.

Police said unauthorized entry into the building could lead to charges of breaking and entering. Owners or others with interest in the property may apply to the Superior Court of Justice for permission to enter.

As a result of the investigation, a 25-year-old London resident was charged with possession of property obtained by crime, possessing cannabis for the purpose of selling, and possession of illicit cannabis. The accused was released from custody and is scheduled to appear in court Sept. 29.

Police reminded the public that only the Ontario Cannabis Store and provincially licensed retailers are authorized to sell cannabis.
