This photo of a postcard was sent to us by Joanna Toulouse.
It depicts the Omar D. Conger ship in Wallaceburg.
Published reports indicate the wooden steam ferry Omar D. Conger was destroyed in a boiler explosion on March 26, 1922, while docked in Port Huron, Michigan.
Built in 1882 and used for passenger service on the St. Clair River, the vessel was tied up when a boiler malfunction triggered the blast after cold water was introduced into an overheated system.
The explosion tore the ship apart, caused damage to nearby waterfront structures, and killed four crew members.
The incident remains a notable maritime disaster in the region’s history.
Anyone know what year this would postcard be from?
