Mississauga resident charged following cybercrime investigation

OPP officials allege: A Mississauga resident has been charged after an Ontario Provincial Police cybercrime investigation into fraudulent cryptocurrency activity.

The OPP Cybercrime Investigations Team launched the probe in May 2023, focusing on fraud used to access cryptocurrency accounts. On Aug. 20, 2025, investigators executed a search warrant at a Mississauga residence and seized multiple electronic devices.

A 24-year-old from Mississauga has been charged with identity theft, fraud, use of a forged document and identity fraud. The accused was released from custody and is scheduled to appear in court in Brampton on Oct. 1.

Police are reminding the public that cybercrime poses a growing threat to personal, organizational and national security. The OPP encourages people to strengthen cybersecurity practices and report suspicious activity to police or the Canadian Centre for Cyber Security.

The OPP Cybercrime Investigations Team works with law enforcement agencies, government, academia and the private sector to share intelligence and respond to crimes ranging from data breaches to online fraud and dark web activity.
