The Walpole Island Fire Department responded to a BBQ fire Saturday evening, reminding residents to keep safety in mind when cooking outdoors.
Firefighters said the residents had already extinguished the flames before crews arrived. Fire personnel ensured the fire was completely out and the scene was safe.
The department used the incident as an opportunity to remind the community of key barbecue safety practices, including keeping grills at least three metres away from homes or flammable materials, checking for gas leaks, and never leaving a BBQ unattended while in use.
Residents are also encouraged to keep a fire extinguisher or garden hose nearby and allow grills to cool completely before covering or storing them.
The department thanked the residents for their quick action and reminded the public to call 911 immediately if a fire occurs.
