OPP officials allege: A 48-year-old Lakeshore resident is facing impaired driving and off-road vehicle charges after being stopped while operating a golf cart on a public road Monday evening.
According to the Ontario Provincial Police, an officer on patrol along Caille Avenue around 7:20 p.m. on October 13 observed a golf cart being driven on the roadway. After stopping the vehicle, the officer detected signs of impairment.
The driver was arrested and taken to a local detachment for further testing. Police say the individual was charged with operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration over 80, as well as several offences under the Off-Road Vehicle Act, including driving an off-road vehicle on a highway, failing to surrender a permit, operating without insurance, and driving without a number plate.
The accused was released from custody and is scheduled to appear in Windsor court on October 28, 2025. A 90-day licence suspension was issued and the vehicle was impounded for seven days.
Essex County OPP reminds motorists that operating golf carts on public roads is only permitted in Lighthouse Cove and on Pelee Island as part of a pilot project under the Highway Traffic Act. Police note that a golf cart is considered a motor vehicle under the Criminal Code, and impaired driving laws apply.
