Impaired driving charge laid after crash near Waterworks Road and Confederation Line

Sarnia Police Service officials allege: A 23-year-old Front Street resident is facing an impaired driving charge after a vehicle struck a hydro pole and came to rest in a cornfield early Saturday morning, Sarnia police say.

Police received a crash detection alert from a cellular device around 12:13 a.m. on October 18 in the area of Waterworks Road and Confederation Line. Officers arrived to find a severely damaged vehicle about 100 metres into a cornfield and the lone occupant walking near the wreck with minor injuries.

Police say the impact had severed a hydro pole, and evidence of alcohol and cannabis consumption was found inside the vehicle.

The driver was arrested for impaired operation but was transported by ambulance to Bluewater Health for medical assessment. At the hospital, police determined he was unable to provide breath samples, and a blood demand was issued. Samples were sent for analysis.

The 23-year-old was released at the hospital with an appearance notice for impaired driving. Police say the investigation remains ongoing, with additional charges possible pending the results of the blood analysis.
