The annual UCC Lancers Scare Hunger food drive has once again made a major impact, delivering truckloads of donations to Chatham Outreach for Hunger earlier this week.
“It was fantastic!” said Brenda LeClair, executive director of Chatham Outreach for Hunger. “On Monday, truck after truck after truck kept rolling up to our doors with skids of food. We are overwhelmed and couldn’t be happier!”
Organized by the UCC Cares Group, the annual initiative sees students spread out across neighbourhoods collecting non-perishable food items. This year’s drive filled the school’s foyer and lined the main hallway with donations before being loaded up for delivery.
Van Hoof Siding Place provided its cube van and driver to help transport the food across town, while UCC staff members with SUVs and pickup trucks volunteered to join the convoy.
“The students are amazing,” said LeClair. “They haul all of the food into our warehouse and stock the shelves for us.”
Principal Lisa Harnarine said the effort reflects the school’s spirit of community service.
“I want to thank our students, staff and the residents of our community, who always come through for us,” Harnarine said.
LeClair added that the timing of the donation couldn’t have been better.
“The timing couldn’t be better,” she said. “Our supplies were getting pretty low; but now we’re in good shape as we head into the Christmas season.”
