Over 2,000 LKDSB students attend Sarnia Sting’s annual School Day Game

More than 2,000 students from the Lambton Kent District School Board (LKDSB) packed the stands at Progressive Auto Sales Arena for the Sarnia Sting’s third annual School Day Game, marking a record turnout for the event.

The special weekday game gave students a chance to experience the excitement of live hockey in an inclusive and educational setting. For many, it was their first-ever live game, made even more memorable by sharing the day with classmates and school staff.

A standout moment came when students joined together to sing O’Canada, filling the arena with energy and school spirit.

Some of the players on the ice were already familiar faces to LKDSB students — members of the Sarnia Sting regularly visit local schools to serve breakfast, read with students and lead physical activity sessions throughout the year.

The event was supported by several community partners. Lambton Dairy Farmers donated chocolate milk for every student, Kyle’s No Frills provided snacks such as granola bars and fresh fruit, and Sarnia Sting season ticket holders donated tickets to ensure complimentary admission for students facing financial barriers.

“It’s good for kids to be able to participate in events like this and we are fortunate to have such great community support and partnerships that make it possible,” said LKDSB Director of Education Gary Girardi. “Together, we’re building moments that really matter for our students.”

Val Gotelaer, Manager of Group Sales and Experience for the Sarnia Sting — and a proud LKDSB alum — said the event is one of the team’s most meaningful initiatives.

“Our organization prides itself on being a leader in the community and a positive role model for our youth,” Gotelaer said. “The School Day Game is one of the most meaningful events we host each season. So many students, many of which are attending their first ever live hockey game, come together for a fun and memorable experience with their school communities. We’re thankful for the support of our local schools and for their collaboration and support on this community and youth-focused initiative.”

The School Day Game continues to grow in popularity each year, offering students a unique opportunity to connect with peers, celebrate local sports culture and build lasting community memories.

The LKDSB extended its thanks to all sponsors, volunteers and families who helped make the event possible.
