Homeowners’ quick action stops stove fire on Walpole Island

The Walpole Island Fire Department responded to reports of a possible structure fire this evening, discovering smoke coming from the front door of a residence. Upon investigation, crews determined the source was a stove-top fire.

Most of the fire had already been extinguished by the residents using a fire extinguisher before firefighters arrived. Fire crews confirmed the fire was fully out and used ventilation fans to remove smoke from the home.

“A big thank-you to the homeowners for staying calm and acting quickly – your preparedness and use of a fire extinguisher made all the difference!” the fire department said.

The department reminded the community of cooking fire safety tips, emphasizing the importance of never leaving cooking unattended, keeping flammable items away from the stove, having a working fire extinguisher nearby, and knowing how to use it. They also urged residents to turn off heat and cover a pan with a lid in case of a small grease fire and to regularly test smoke alarms.

“Your quick response can help prevent a small fire from becoming a large one,” the department added.
