King Street West lane closures begin Monday for reconstruction project

Motorists can expect new traffic disruptions in downtown Chatham starting Monday, November 10, as part of the ongoing King Street West reconstruction project.

The Municipality of Chatham-Kent says the westbound lane of King Street West will be closed west of the intersection at Lacroix Street. The northbound left-turn lane on Lacroix Street will also be closed, and southbound traffic on Lacroix Street will not be permitted to turn right onto King Street West.

King Street West, east of Lacroix Street, will remain closed. The municipality anticipates these closures will remain in place until Friday, November 21, 2025. Through traffic on Lacroix Street, both northbound and southbound, will be maintained.

“Motorists are advised to follow construction detour signage at all times as the dates of the closures may change as work progresses,” the municipality said in a release. “Access to all properties will be maintained throughout the project. The contractor will take every precaution to minimize interruptions, but there may be some inconvenience during work. The Municipality of Chatham-Kent thanks motorists for their patience during this important infrastructure work.”

The lane closure will also temporarily reroute Transit Route 4. The bus will detour via Wellington Street at Lacroix Street to Richmond Street, then to Inshes Avenue, and back to King Street West. No existing bus stops will be affected.

According to the municipality, the reconstruction project is proceeding on schedule and involves approximately 160 metres of King Street West from Lacroix Street eastward. Current work focuses on replacing underground infrastructure, with surface upgrades to follow in the coming weeks.

Those upgrades will include new asphalt pavement, concrete curbs, and sidewalks, as well as the installation of a new all-way stop at the intersection of King Street West and Second Street.
