LKDSB reaffirms commitment to safety and inclusion during Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week

The Lambton Kent District School Board is marking Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week by emphasizing its commitment to creating safe, inclusive, and respectful learning environments for all students.

Each year, Ontario designates the third week of November to promote awareness and prevention of bullying in schools. The LKDSB said the week serves as a reminder of the importance of kindness, empathy, and inclusion in maintaining positive school communities.

“At LKDSB, we believe that fostering a culture of kindness, empathy, and inclusion is essential to preventing bullying,” the board said in a statement. “Our schools actively promote values that encourage students to be good friends, upstanders, and allies.”

Through regular classroom activities and training, students learn how to recognize bullying, support their peers, and contribute to a healthy school climate. The board also highlights student-led initiatives, cultural observances, and awareness events as ways to celebrate diversity and strengthen inclusion.

“Research shows that students who understand and appreciate diversity are significantly less likely to engage in bullying behaviors,” the board said. “This is why inclusion is a value, as well as a strategy.”

The LKDSB noted that as technology evolves, cyberbullying continues to be a growing concern. The board said it is proactively addressing the issue by integrating cyber safety education into the curriculum and partnering with local police services and community organizations to educate students on responsible online behaviour and the real-world consequences of digital harassment.

To support student safety, the board has implemented a secure online reporting system that allows students and families to report bullying concerns confidentially. School administrators review and follow up on each report to ensure every situation is addressed “with care and urgency.”

The LKDSB also emphasized that bullying prevention is a shared community responsibility, involving collaboration with mental health professionals, law enforcement, and advocacy groups to provide comprehensive support and long-term prevention strategies.

“Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week is a chance to spotlight the work happening year-round across our board,” the statement said. “It’s a time to educate, reflect, and recommit to creating schools where every student feels safe, valued, and empowered.”

The board encouraged students, parents, guardians, educators, and staff to take part in activities throughout the week and help “build a future where kindness leads, differences are celebrated, and every student thrives.”
