Walpole Island Fire Department contains field fire near homes

The Walpole Island Fire Department is reminding residents to take extra care when conducting outdoor burns after crews responded to a field fire Tuesday afternoon that had grown out of control.

The fire broke out in a dry, grassy area and was close to several occupied homes, prompting an urgent response. Firefighters were able to contain the blaze before it spread further, and no injuries were reported.

The department says field fires can escalate quickly, particularly in dry conditions. Officials urge anyone planning a burn to ensure they have the proper permissions in place, monitor the fire closely from start to finish, keep water or an extinguisher on hand, and choose a day with low wind. Residents are also encouraged to clear the area of dry grass and debris beforehand, burn small sections at a time, and be prepared to put out the fire quickly if conditions change. Burning should be avoided during extremely dry periods or when advisories are in effect.

Fire officials say community cooperation is essential to preventing similar incidents and keeping the area safe.
