St. Clair Region Conservation Authority is offering a cost-sharing program to help landowners control invasive Phragmites (Phragmites australis) on their properties throughout 2026.
Phragmites is a highly invasive reed that can reach up to five metres in height and form dense stands, threatening wetlands, waterways, forests, and agricultural lands in the St. Clair Region. Left unmanaged, it can degrade natural habitats, outcompete native plants, increase fire risk, and restrict recreational access.
The program covers the cost of necessary control measures and equipment, while participating landowners are responsible for fees associated with a licensed exterminator, estimated at approximately $50 per hour.
“Invasive species like Phragmites can quickly overwhelm natural areas if left unmanaged,” said Jeff Sharp, Manager of Conservation Services at the SCRCA. “This program provides the tools and support they need to manage Phragmites on their property and make a real difference for the health of our watershed.”

The initiative is supported by the Invasive Species Centre and undertaken in partnership with the Invasive Phragmites Control Centre and the Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority.
Residents are also encouraged to learn more about invasive species during Invasive Species Week, February 23 to March 1.
