Students from across Chatham-Kent explored hands-on pathways into the agri-food sector Tuesday during Agriculture Career Day at the University of Guelph’s Ridgetown Campus.
Held Nov. 18 at 120 Main St. E., the event introduced students to real-world agricultural careers, employer expectations and the technologies shaping modern farming. The day featured demonstrations in ag robotics, employer presentations, career booths and networking sessions with educators and industry leaders.
Local employers taking part included The Andersons, Grodan, Drone Spray Canada, Haggerty Creek Ltd. and Southpoint Equipment.
“Events like Agriculture Career Day are an important way to build awareness of workforce needs and help students stay connected to local employment opportunities,” said Teresa Fysh, Chatham-Kent’s talent attraction and retention coordinator. “By connecting education and industry, we’re helping students see a strong future for themselves right here in Chatham-Kent.”
“Innovation is at the core of Chatham-Kent’s agri-food sector,” added Sean Columbus, economic development officer. “Events like Agriculture Career Day showcase how new ideas and technologies are shaping opportunities for students and employers alike.”
The event was organized by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Agribusiness, the University of Guelph Ridgetown Campus and the Municipality of Chatham-Kent, in collaboration with local employers and educators. It was coordinated by the CK Job Preparation Action Team, which brings together school boards, post-secondary schools and municipal partners to link education and industry and support workforce development.
