Sarnia officers awarded Ontario Medal for Police Bravery

Two Sarnia Police officers have been awarded the Ontario Medal for Police Bravery for their actions during a violent incident that left one of them seriously injured.

Detective Const. Karl Brown and Detective Const. Erik Ostenfeldt received the medal on Nov. 24 at a ceremony in Toronto, where the Lieutenant Governor and Solicitor General honoured officers for acts of outstanding courage.

The recognition stems from an Aug. 20, 2024 call that initially appeared routine. Officers were dispatched after a man had been yelling throughout the day and police were asked to check his well-being. When Brown and Ostenfeldt arrived, a civilian told them the yelling had changed and sounded like the man was in pain. At 10:10 p.m., they knocked repeatedly on the apartment door and announced themselves but received no response. Concerned for the occupant’s safety, they used a master key to enter, again announcing their presence.

While searching the apartment, a man emerged from a concealed area and attacked Brown with a knife, stabbing him repeatedly in the head, face, hand and neck. Brown fought back as Ostenfeldt immediately intervened, disregarding his own safety. Despite Brown’s serious wounds, the two officers subdued, disarmed and secured the attacker.

Ostenfeldt radioed for help and began providing lifesaving first aid to Brown until other officers and EMS arrived. Brown was rushed to hospital for emergency treatment. A charge of attempted murder was later laid and remains before the courts.

Both officers eventually returned to duty after what police described as a long healing process. The service said the award reflects their courage, resilience and commitment to the community.

“This incident has affected our organization deeply and is a sobering reminder of the dangers officers face in their difficult work. There is no such thing as a routine call,” Chief Derek Davis said. “On that fateful night, we saw all our officers and civilian staff, unified into a single urgent mission to ensure our injured officer was taken to safety. As Chief, I am grateful to all involved, including our partners in EMS and the emergency medical staff at Bluewater Health, for their urgent lifesaving response.

“We are immensely proud of the courageous actions of Constables Brown and Ostenfeldt, in the face of this violent ambush attack. They persevered through one of the most harrowing situations an officer can encounter, surviving to return home to their families and friends. I congratulate them both on receiving the Medal of Police Bravery.”
