Chatham-Kent Police Service officials allege: Two women managed to escape unharmed after their vehicle went into the water off Mariners Road in Erieau late Thursday night.
Police say the driver hit the gas instead of the brake shortly after 10 p.m., sending the vehicle into the channel, which is about 20 feet deep.
The windshield shattered as the car entered the water, allowing a 20-year-old woman and an 18-year-old woman to get out before it sank.
After spending roughly four minutes in the water, they located a ladder and climbed out before getting help at a nearby home.
The Harbour Master and Federal Docks were notified about the submerged vehicle.
