Work to begin on new Chatham-Kent Community Hub next week

Fortis Construction Group Inc. will begin mobilizing the week of Dec. 1 to start work on the new Chatham-Kent Community Hub at 130 King Street West in Chatham.

The project will create a centralized destination for civic services, community programming and cultural activities, with the aim of strengthening activity and vibrancy in the downtown core.

Early work will include installing perimeter fencing, preparing for exterior demolition and beginning north and south building expansions.

Several temporary closures will be in place throughout construction. The sidewalk and parking spaces on the south side of King Street West and the east side of Fifth Street near the project site will be closed starting next week. The northbound Route 5 transit stop on Fifth Street at King Street West will also be out of service for the duration of the project.

Traffic control will be installed around the site Dec. 2 and 3 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Traffic will be maintained, but delays are expected along Fifth Street from Wellington Street West to King Street West and along King Street West from Fifth Street to Sixth Street. Police will be on site to direct traffic.

Several transit stops will be affected next week. On Dec. 2, Route 5 stop ID 5102 on Fifth Street at King Street will be out of service for the duration of the project, and Route 2 stop ID 2057 on Fifth Street at Llewellyn Street will be temporarily out of service while barriers are installed. On Dec. 3, Route 5 stop ID 5143 on King Street West at Sixth Street will also be temporarily out of service.

On-street parking on the north side of King Street West, nearby downtown parking lots and the pedestrian crossing at King Street West and Sixth Street will remain open. Signage will be posted for all sidewalk closures.

The Chatham-Kent Community Hub is a major redevelopment of the downtown property, bringing together a new municipal library, museum and civic centre in a modern, accessible and community-focused facility.
