The municipality has officially launched Next Generation 9-1-1 (NG9-1-1), a major upgrade to Canada’s emergency communication system designed to improve how residents connect with police, fire and paramedic services when time is critical.
According to the municipality, NG9-1-1 ensures first responders have access to “the most modern and reliable network available.” The system allows emergency responders to receive real-time digital information from callers, including more accurate location data and, eventually, the ability to receive text messages, images and video. Officials say the enhancements will help responders understand situations faster and deploy the right resources.
“Keeping our community safe is at the core of everything we do,” said Chatham-Kent Police Chief Kirk Earley. “NG9-1-1 will make sure that when someone calls for help, our first responders receive the most accurate and up-to-date information possible so we can get there faster. This technology is built around the needs of the people we serve.”
The municipality says NG9-1-1 brings several improvements for residents, including faster response times through better data sharing, more precise caller location, richer information for responders, improved coordination between police, fire and EMS, and a safer, more connected community.
The Ontario government has provided close to $4 million since 2022 to support the municipality’s transition to the new system.
“Upgrading Ontario’s public safety communications will be a game changer,” said Solicitor General Michael Kerzner. “Next Generation 9-1-1 gives first responders real-time, life-saving information which means a faster, more effective emergency response. Under the leadership of Premier Ford, our government will always have the backs of those who protect our province. That’s why we are proud to provide funding to Chatham-Kent for this new technology which will mean more calls will be answered, more lives will be saved and people across the city can count on emergency services when it matters most.”
“Every second matters,” said Acting General Manager of EMS Peter Morassutti. “Better situational awareness means paramedics can begin life-saving decision-making from the moment we are dispatched.”
Assistant Fire Chief Adam Walters said the upgrade will significantly support fire services. “NG9-1-1 will transform how we respond to emergencies. By providing faster, more detailed information, it allows our crews to prepare and act with precision to incidents where every second counts.”
Mayor Darrin Canniff said the launch reinforces the municipality’s commitment to public safety. “This upgrade is about giving our residents the confidence that when they need help, we have the best technology and tools to protect them. NG9-1-1 will save lives in Chatham-Kent, and that’s what matters most. I would like to thank the Province of Ontario for their funding support in our transition to NG9-1-1.”
Officials say the introduction of the upgraded system does not change how residents place or experience 9-1-1 calls. In an emergency, residents should continue to dial 9-1-1.
