Man arrested after intimate partner violence incident

Sarnia Police Service officials allege: Sarnia police have arrested a man following an intimate partner violence incident that left a woman and child with minor injuries on Thursday afternoon.

Officers were called around 1:05 p.m. after a woman reported she had been assaulted by a man with whom she previously had a relationship. The two share a young child, and the woman told police she had been visiting when the man, who had been drinking, became involved in an argument with her. She said she was thrown to the floor and kicked, and that when she attempted to leave with the child, the man tried to pull the child away.

The woman and child were able to flee the home and ran to a nearby retail store to call police. Officers who responded noted minor injuries to the woman and a bruise on the child’s arm. Both were assessed by EMS and taken to hospital for non-life-threatening treatment.

Police were told the man remained inside his Durand Street residence with a teenage relative. With grounds to arrest, officers attended the home, but the man refused to come out, prompting police to contain the area. Additional Sarnia Police Service resources — including the Emergency Response Team, K9 unit and negotiators — were deployed as the standoff continued.

Investigators with the criminal investigations division obtained a warrant authorizing police to enter the residence. At 4:05 p.m., the Emergency Response Team and K9 Vader forced entry, arresting the man without further incident. He is charged with two counts of assault involving the woman and child and was held for a bail hearing.

Police did not release the man’s name to protect the identity of the victim and children involved.

Anyone experiencing intimate partner violence is urged to seek help. In emergencies, call 911. Non-emergencies can be reported to Sarnia police at 519-344-8861. Local supports include the Women’s Interval Home, The Centre Sarnia-Lambton, Victim Services and Réseau Femmes, all of which provide crisis response and assistance.
