Police lay impaired driving charges after Christmas RIDE stop

Sarnia Police Service officials allege: Sarnia police say Christmas RIDE enforcement is underway throughout December, with additional officers assigned to impaired driving enforcement. RIDE teams are conducting spot checks, mobile enforcement through traffic stops, responding to impaired driving complaints and using mandatory alcohol screening.

Just after midnight on Dec. 5, police received a report about a possible impaired driver in a red pickup truck. RIDE officers in the area located the vehicle a short time later and conducted a traffic stop. Police say the male driver, who was alone in the truck, showed signs of alcohol impairment. He was arrested and later provided two breath samples registering 220 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood. The legal limit is 80.

A 58-year-old Sarnia resident was released on a police undertaking and charged with impaired driving and driving with a blood-alcohol concentration over 0.08. The vehicle was impounded for seven days, and the driver’s licence was suspended for 90 days.

Police are reminding the public of the dangers of impaired driving and directing residents to resources from MADD Canada for more information.
