Chatham-Kent installs new AEDs at 40 municipal facilities

The Municipality of Chatham-Kent has completed the installation of new automated external defibrillators at 40 municipal locations across the community, expanding access to life-saving equipment and strengthening emergency preparedness in public spaces.

The AEDs have been placed in high-use municipal facilities such as arenas, municipal centres, libraries and pools, which collectively serve thousands of residents and visitors each year. Municipal officials say having immediate access to emergency equipment in these locations is critical, particularly during recreational activities and community programming.

AEDs are designed to assist individuals experiencing sudden cardiac arrest by helping restore a normal heart rhythm. When used promptly, the devices can significantly improve survival rates. They are designed to be safe and easy to operate, providing step-by-step voice instructions to guide users until emergency responders arrive.

“Having AEDs readily available in our municipal facilities can make a real difference in an emergency,” said Mayor Darrin Canniff. “This investment is about protecting the health and safety of our residents, visitors, and staff, and ensuring our public spaces are as safe and prepared as possible.”

Municipal officials say enhancing public safety remains a key priority, and the new AED installations complement existing emergency response measures already in place at municipal buildings. The initiative is intended to ensure staff, patrons and community members have access to vital equipment when it is needed most.

The municipality says the AEDs will be clearly marked, regularly maintained and fully integrated into emergency response protocols at each location.
