Mattress fire extinguished at Chatham apartment

Chatham-Kent firefighters responded to reports of smoke at an apartment building on Pine Street Wednesday morning, quickly extinguishing a small fire and preventing injuries or displacement.

At about 10:20 a.m. on Jan. 28, crews from Stations 1 and 2 were dispatched to 85 Pine Street in Chatham, where they located a mattress on fire inside one of the units.

The building’s maintenance staff assisted the tenant out of the apartment safely before firefighters arrived.

The fire was brought under control quickly, with no injuries reported and no residents displaced.

Fire officials say the incident underscores the ongoing risks associated with smoking materials in residential settings.

“Smoking materials continue to be a leading cause of fatal home fires,” said Public Information Officer Whitney Burk.

“Please avoid smoking in bed or when tired, always use deep, sturdy ashtrays, make sure cigarette butts are fully extinguished in water or sand, and keep all smoking materials away from bedding, furniture, and anything that can burn. Small steps like these help prevent dangerous fires.”
