From The Pastor’s Pen – By Brian Horrobin
I read a great quote by Clint Hurdle, a longtime coach in Major League Baseball, who was speaking about gaining and maintaining strength.
He said, “The best exercise for gaining strength is not missing workouts.”
For a number of years now I have belonged to a gym in our community.
I have met all sorts of people and work out at the same time each day with a group of regulars.
There are also a number of other people who come from time to time, in fits and starts, but then disappear.
I feel badly for these people because when you first meet them they are bound and determined they will change the world by their zeal and reap the results.
However, most of these are a mere flash in the pan and they disappear before long, never to be seen from again.
What they fail to realize is that skipping workouts just sets you back and makes you have to start all over again.
Results come from consistency.
I recently told my wife that I wanted to be more present and focused when she was talking to me.
That means putting my phone down, looking her in the eyes, and listening to her.
Years ago, I wanted to be more disciplined in reading, so a friend encouraged me to keep a log of books I read.
We even had a contest one year to see who could read the most books.
That was 22 years ago, and I continue to track my reading.
Not missing workouts can translate into writing down appointments so you keep them, setting the alarm early so that you can start your day unhurried, or even setting up automatic withdrawals for a charity you wish to support.
I don’t miss reading my Bible or attending church because I plan for those things in my life.
Are you consistent with the things that matter most in your life?
What workouts are you missing?
