The Chatham-Kent Police Service is warning residents about a recent increase in grandparent and emergency-style scams targeting community members, particularly older adults.
Police say scammers are contacting victims by phone and falsely claiming that a loved one is in immediate trouble and urgently needs money. The calls are designed to create fear and pressure, often demanding secrecy and quick payment before the victim has time to verify the information.
In some cases, victims have lost significant amounts of money. Police say in other situations, quick verification with family members prevented any financial loss. The Chatham-Kent Police Service reminds residents that police will never request money, bail payments, gift cards, cryptocurrency or wire transfers over the phone.
To help raise awareness, police say they will be sharing a series of informational posts on social media outlining common scam tactics, warning signs and prevention tips to help residents protect themselves and their families.
Anyone who believes they may have been targeted by a scam is encouraged to contact the Chatham-Kent Police Service by calling 519-352-1234 for non-emergencies, or 911 in an emergency, even if no money was lost.
