CK Public Health receives baby-friendly initiative redesignation

CK Public Health has once again been recognized for its commitment to supporting families, having received redesignation under the Baby-Friendly Initiative from the Breastfeeding Committee for Canada.

The redesignation reflects the health unit’s continued focus on promoting and supporting breastfeeding throughout Chatham-Kent. Medical Officer of Health Dr. Shanker Nesathurai said breastfeeding plays an important role in infant health, providing essential nutrients while also helping protect babies from illness. He said participation in the Baby-Friendly Initiative demonstrates that CK Public Health delivers high-quality programs and support for mothers and infants.

The Baby-Friendly Initiative is a global program developed by the World Health Organization and UNICEF to support the health of babies and parents through clear policies, trained staff and safe, supportive environments for breastfeeding. For CK Public Health, the designation means families are provided with consistent and accurate information, non-judgmental breastfeeding support, assistance for parents who are not breastfeeding, and care delivered by well-trained staff who prioritize healthy parent-child relationships.

Health unit officials say maintaining the designation is important for ensuring families across Chatham-Kent feel respected and supported while giving babies the best possible start. Breastfeeding is widely recognized for supporting infant development, strengthening immune systems and contributing to long-term health outcomes for both children and parents.

Dana Boyd, program manager with CK Public Health, said the redesignation reflects the dedication of the Healthy Growth and Development team and community partners. She said families can feel confident knowing the care and guidance they receive are based on best practices and delivered with respect for individual needs and choices.
