OPP seek public’s help in 1999 double homicide investigation

Ontario Provincial Police are again appealing to the public for information in a double homicide that occurred in Elgin County more than 27 years ago.

The Elgin County OPP say the Province of Ontario is offering a $50,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the deaths of Roger Smith and Wendy Haveron.

Police say that during the early morning hours of Feb. 2, 1999, members of the Southwold Fire Department and Elgin County OPP responded to a house fire on Wellington Road in Southwold. Two people were found deceased inside the residence.

The investigation later determined the couple died as a result of blunt force trauma and that the fire had been deliberately set. Both deaths were ruled homicides.

The case continues to be investigated by members of the Elgin County OPP Crime Unit under the direction of the OPP’s Criminal Investigation Branch. Police say investigators and family members believe someone may still have information that could help solve the case.

Anyone with information is urged to contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122. Those wishing to remain anonymous can contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or submit a tip online through Ontario Crime Stoppers.
